About Us
Vision
Ohio's indigenous people, which includes our students and faculty, represent
a wide variety of tribal backgrounds, region, cultural traditions, education,
and research. According to native protocol, we acknowledge the ancestral ties
of Shawnees, and subsequently of Wyandots and Delawares. The Ohio State University¹s
American Indian Studies Minor offers students the opportunity to explore Native
histories, issues, and perspectives from a local, regional, and global level
within multiple disciplines.
The vision is to ground OSU in its native Ohio history, assist campus departments
with recruiting American Indian faculty and students, supporting research by
students, staff, and faculty, providing a focal point for scholars, staff, students
and community members who are interested in research, education, and issues
about Native Americans, through collaborations with the American Indian Studies,
Multicultural Center, American Indian Student Services, Office of Minority Affairs
, Native American Living Learning Program, American Indian Alumni society and
external community.
Rationale
What can a Native American Studies program do?
- Work toward the creation of an undergraduate minor. This will require the development of additional courses in several departments, a central focus and requirements for the minor, and coordination among faculty in curriculum development and scheduling. In addition, service-learning projects should be offered to students.
- Offer assistance to departments in recruiting faculty and students.
- Coordinate and support efforts to develop programs, concerts, conferences, and other projects.
- Providing indigenous perspectives on current areas and discipline and developing indigenous voice(s).
