This course will explore 3 self-determined indigenous films.
1. The Day the Moon Bled by film maker by Takuma Kuikuro. This film explores an eclipse through stories, song, dance and more. The setting is in the Xingu area of Brazil. Discussion will be led by Dr. Ballengee Morris, American Indian Studies Coordinator and associate professor, Art Education.
2. Ten Canoes by Rolf de Heer and the people of Ramingining. This ground-breaking film offers a glimpse into Aboriginal life in Australia centuries before the coming of Europeans. A parable of forbidden love and family conflict lies at the center of this visually striking and multi-layered story. Discussion will be led by Dr. Chadwick Allen, associate professor, Department of English.
3. The Business of Fancy Dancing by Sherman Alexie. This is the second film written and produced by the popular and controversial U.S. American Indian poet, fiction writer, comedian, and film-maker. Set on and off the Spokane Reservation in Washington, Alexie's film explores difficult issues of personal and tribal identity when a significant death on the reservation reunites two estranged best friends after sixteen years. Discussion will be led by Dr. Chadwick Allen, associate professor, Department of English.
Reflection papers (3 pages) will be due January 29th (electronically posted), students should explore themes and thoughts about the films.
