The Latinx Studies program will join Dr. Rudy Guevarra, Jr. in a discussion about his new book, Aloha Compadre: Latinxs in Hawai'i, as part of the Latinx Studies Speaker Series. Dr. Guevarra will discuss the historical migrations of Latinxs to the Hawaiian Islands, their various cultural and economic contributions and how they have developed a distinct Pacific Latinidad in Hawai'i. A reception will follow.
Dr. Rudy Guevarra Jr. is Professor and Honors Faculty of Asian Pacific American studies in the School of Social Transformation, and affiliate faculty in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. His research and teaching interests include relational Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, Pacific Islander Studies, Filipinx American history, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, U.S. labor and borderlands history, transnational and transpacific migration, race and food studies, Critical Mixed Race Studies and oral history and memory.
